Today, I had to rethink hard what I have been reading in the blogs of James Howard Kunstler and Charles Hugh Smith, both in their own ways are like those prophets of the old testament warning us about the errors of our ways ….. It dawned on me last Saturday, that there is much merit in their musings, insanity is definitely upon the suburban crowd and unfortunately I am a part of it…..
On Saturday, my wife and I decided to pay a visit to a big box store and we found the parking lot full and had to wait to find a spot. We were patient and followed the immense crowd like lemmings or robotized, lobotomized suburbanites in need of a shopping fix. I did not realize how insane this whole affair was until I was back at the car and tried to leave.
It was literally insane as otherwise civilized citizens of this great nation started to behave with great road rage including cutting each other off and flipping the proverbial bird!!!
While I was witnessing all this I reminisced the writings of Kunstler in the Long emergency and his weekly blog posts. He cannot be more accurate as to what is happening to all of us.
It is one of the reasons I decided to blog on the Baby boomer’s health issues. This is the largest cohort of the last 60-70 years and it defines present and future policies, market conditions and all that jazz…However, if there is one thing this generation is known for it is its incredibly stressful ways and very high divorce rates.
The question is why?? Why do we have an explosion of metabolic syndrome, obesity, autoimmune conditions? Some blame our processed foods, others our lifestyle, environmental toxins and so on. Every morning paper has a health section stating some great truth about a tiny trace mineral or vitamin or miracle fruit or product as if the human body was a simple system which it is obviously not……
In my mind, this question is the riddle of our time and answering it may go a long way to alleviate what is ailing us…… In Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar…this is a gem to remember:
“The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,
But in ourselves, that we are underlings.”
Julius Caesar (I, ii, 140-141)
Maybe, just maybe this could be the spark that will start the journey towards sanity again…
Signing off… Till next time
